Disability groups have criticised this week's sudden announcement that government will implement its own support needs assessments for People with Disability. They fear this means a return to the earlier controversial process of independent assessment.
Advocacy groups, including People with Disability Australia (PWDA) and Australian Autism Alliance, say they strongly oppose the government's new mandatory assessment process. Cautioning against rushed implementation the groups say they want to be involved to improve the reforms to critical supports. Without assurances they say concerns linger over automation, reduced choice, and control.
PWDA President Trinity Ford expressed frustration over a lack of consultation, calling for clarity on timeframes and codesign processes. She said the "process must prioritize people with disability, not efficiency,” emphasising the need for assessments to be conducted by trusted providers who understand individuals’ unique circumstances.
