Essential community sector workers – including those in the disability sector – will be receiving an extra $25 million in their pay packets this financial year.

The salary increase will be applied automatically and reflects the recent decision of the Fair Work Commission to set a higher minimum wage. This funding boost will eventually see a much-needed extra $257 million added to the wages of workers in the sector.

The Federal Government says changing to indexing will see a further $315 million package paid to the sector over the next four years as an extra means of compensating workers for the increasing cost of living.

Disability Minister Bill Shorten says the additional funding will ultimately mean better outcomes for NDIS participants across the nation.

This change is, however, a simple indexing of pay for some of the lowest-paid workers in Australia. Analysts say what will be more important for the sector is the result of an Issues paper currently being worked on by government.

This is seeking ‘innovative approaches’ to future ways of funding of the community sector.
